Your pilot navigates between mountain ridges, thermal columns, and coastal wind patterns, covering the greatest distance Tenerife's south coast allows. This is the flight that shows you why pilots dedicate their lives to this sport. The air does the work. Fifteen minutes in, you have stopped thinking about the harness. The wing is a shape you no longer need to see. What you notice instead is the way the ridge pulls the air upward in one place and lets it drop a few hundred metres further on. The way a thermal starts as a tremor and becomes a circling climb. The way two pilots, flying the same route on the same day, will end up a kilometre apart because one of them read the column better. You will not read anything. You are the passenger. But for forty minutes, you are present inside a calculation that most people will never see from the inside. That is the Pro XC. It is not an experience. It is a window.

You take off from Ifonche, at 960 metres, on the eastern side of the ridge. This is the site pilots use for long-distance flights because the geography does the heavy lifting: the ridge generates lift along a three-kilometre stretch, thermal columns rise off the volcanic slopes below, and the coastal sea breeze draws everything westward toward the landing. Your pilot will work between all three. On a good day, you will fly as far as the edge of Los Cristianos before turning back toward Playa de Enramada. On an exceptional day, you will gain altitude after takeoff rather than losing it. This is the flight that Touch The Sky's founding pilot flew solo on his first visit to the island, in 2007. It is the one that made him stay.
